Miniature horses and ponies have a long history and a worldwide distribution with their exact origins varying from country to country. Horses and ponies, bred-down through selective breeding techniques to become miniaturized horses and ponies, have been developed on every continent. Upon maturity the Miniature Horse must not exceed 34 inches, 8.2 hands or 86cm in height. If the Miniature Horse exceeds this height it is then placed in another category which is known as Small Horse, these horses must not exceed 38 inches, 9.2 hands or 96.50 cm, please refer to our Breed Standard for more information. Miniature and Small Horses are shown in halter, harness classes and performance events including trail and jumping, many are simply kept as pets.
While miniature horses & ponies have the same physiology as large horses, there are some important issues that are specifi c to their health care. Dwarf genes can compromise these horses & ponies while carrying a foal, competing in jumping or harness and joint health.
